Building collapse in Techiman kills one, injures others

-One person is feared dead after a building collapsed at Techiman

-The incident occurred at dawn on Wednesday

One watchman at a construction site of a building is feared dead and another two sustained various degrees of injuries after the 3-storey building collapsed. The watchman is believed to have passed the night at the construction site.

The incident happened in the wee hours of Wednesday June 28. According to an eyewitness who happens to be the second security man at the construction site placed the accident to have occurred around 3 A.M.

Those who have been affected by the accident are receiving treatment at the hospital. According to reports one of the injured persons is in critical condition at the hospital.

The Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Kwaku Asomah-Cheremeh has visited the accident site to assess the situation.

After the assessment, heads have already started rolling as the minister has ordered for two staff of the Techiman Municipal Assembly to proceed on an indefinite suspension until investigations have been carried out. The affected staff are, the Engineer for the Assembly in the person of Alfred Osei Berko and Isaac Yeboah the Assembly’s Building Inspector.

The minister backed his action by revealing that the 3-storey building was illegal since no proper documentation were provided prior to the construction of the edifice. He also ordered for the construction to be halted immediately.

According to John Kofi Donyinah, the Municipal Chief Executive of the area, the construction was shoddy and it was the cause of the collapse. The MCE also bemoaned that the activities of some contractors who used substandard material for their projects had become rampant in the area.

The Ghana National Fire Service and the National Disaster Management Organization were at the venue to help salvage any survivors who might be trapped under the rubble.

The police have launched an investigation into the matter to ascertain the cause of the collapse. The owner of the collapsed building and the contractor on the project have therefore been invited for questioning.
