Member of Parliament for Bawku Central and a leading member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Mahama Ayariga has praised the qualities of fellow party kingpin Alban Bagbin, saying he would be a fine presidential candidate the party.
The NDC has been on a rebuilding mission following the party’s loss in the 2016 elections.
Currently, the party is working towards regaining power come 2020, with Alban Bagbin openly declaring his ambition to contest.
Mr. Bagbin is the Member of Parliament for Nadowli/ Kaleo Constituency, as well as the Deputy Minister of Parliament.
And Mahama Ayariga has no doubt that Mr Bagbin will be a fine president for Ghana should he contest and win.
Speaking on Starr FM, Ayariga said: “He [Bagbin] was our minority leader and our majority leader…and given his knowledge of the country I have no doubt that he will be a fine President.”
He was, however, quick to point out that he would pick John Mahama over any other NDC candidate.
According to him, the ex-Ghana president faces a big task to regain the confidence of the youth, adding that the defeat in the 2016 elections came as a shock.
He further noted that Mahama is the NDC’s “best bet” for the 2020 elections, if the party wants to return to power.
