Ghana proved its political maturity not just in the 2016 general elections but also the recent maritime dispute against Ivory Coast were the attorney general, Gloria Akufo fought for the interest of the country putting aside their political differences.
The decision by both astute lawyers to present the best case for Ghana did not just receive massive praise among a cross-section of Ghanaians but also deepened Nana Addo’s confidence in the judicial process of the country.
Former attorney general, Marietta Brew Oppong has revealed that working with her successor, Gloria Akufo remains one of the greatest experiences ever relished during her tenure as attorney general and that she continues to see her as a dear sister.
Speaking at a ceremony to honour all the members of the team led by Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Gloria Akuffo, Mr Akufo-Addo stated that : “To each and every one of them, we say ‘ayekoo’; Ghana is indebted to you”. According to Nana Addo, the victory could not have been achieved “through the actions of one person or one political party but a collective effort”.
The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) has delivered its ruling on the four-year-old maritime dispute between Ghana and its Western neighbour, Ivory Coast.
In a seven point unanimous decision, the tribunal chaired by President of the Special Chamber, Judge Boualem Bouguettaya declared that Ghana did not violate Ivory Coast's maritime boundary or any articles of the ITLOS.
