- Gifty Osei stated that musicians spend so much money on payola that they are unable to release new songs
- She added secular musicians do not usually encounter the same challenge
Ghanaian musician, Gifty Osei has identified payola as the bane of Gospel music in Ghana.
According to her, it accounts for the reason artistes have become inactive in recent times.
She added that in recent times, Gospel artistes are unable to release new songs.
This, she stated is because they spend so much money greasing the palms of promoters and disc jockeys (DJ’s).
She argued that artistes are therefore unable to recoup monies paid, and this makes it difficult for them to release new songs.
Gifty Osei went on to say that “Ghanaians don’t have any idea what goes on behind the scenes. Gospel musicians spend millions of cedis promoting their albums which people don’t even buy at the end of the day.”
She further stated that secular artistes sometimes escape this challenge as the DJ’s and promoters readily publicize their hit songs.
She added that “Putting together an album is a big task and you know that unlike secular artistes, it is preferred that gospel musicians perform live and you need to spend money on a band if you don’t have your own.
All these are financially draining for gospel musicians”.
She therefore called for more attention to be focused on the industry.
