Tyler Perry opens up about the abusive man he thought was his father, and why he forgave him

- Tyler Perry’s success hit significance few weeks after he forgave his stepfather

- The filmmaker revealed in an interview that he eventually forgave his stepfather after digging up his circumstantial past

- Emmitt Perry Sr., Tyler’s stepfather actually had an upbringing which informed his abusive treatment of Tyler as a kid

Tyler was a victim of verbal and physical torture at home.

Now forty-eight years old, Tyler also suffered sexual harassment from outsiders in his childhood in New Orleans community.

Tyler Perry’s childhood was terrible – and he had to inquire into Emmitt’s childhood before forgiving him.

What is more – Tyler found out that Emmitt wasn’t his biological father just after forgiving him.

According to Tyler Perry’s findings, Emmitt and his siblings were abandoned at a very tender age.

They were rescued from a canal in Louisiana by a 14-year-old girl who subjected them to untold hardship.

He painfully recounted his findings:

'Every time they would do something wrong, she would tie them in a sack, hang them in a tree and beat them. The brutality that he suffered was extreme, so he had no tools in dealing with being a father, being compassionate, being kind. All of that, I feel, had been beaten out of him.'

Tyler admitted that Emmitt’s childhood was worse – and that understanding where Emmitt came from fueled his decision to forgive him.

Emmitt wasn’t all bad as a stepfather, Tyler admitted – he always ensured they had food to eat.

Though they don’t have a relationship, Tyler revealed that he presently pays back Emmitt’s good deeds.

Forgiving Emmitt must have been the formula Tyler needed for success - his play 'I Know I’ve Been Changed' became a huge success not long after he made amends with Emmitt.

Tyler added that though the show was about forgiving abusive parents, he had not forgiven Emmitt as at when staging the show.
