Real Madrid travel to Girona on Sunday, October 29, looking to keep tabs on Barcelona in the Liga title race but they were stunned by their host 2-1 in a keenly contested game.
Los Blancos broke the deadlock after 12 minutes as Isco finished from close range after Bono could only parry Cristiano Ronaldo's strike.
Ronaldo nearly doubled Real Madrid's lead in the 26th minute but Bono produced a superb save to deny the Portuguese from close range.
10 minutes into the second half, Girona leveled matters as Christian Stuani weaved into the box before firing into the bottom corner.
The home team then took the lead in the 58th minute when Portu turned home Maffeo's strike from close range.
Zinedine Zidane responded with a change as Lucas Vazquez and Marco Asensio replaced Achrag Hakimi and Marcelo in the 67th minute.
Ronaldo squandered a good chance to level matters in the 72nd minute when he directed a header straight at Bono from close range.
Los Blancos were camped in the visitors half as they went in search of an equaliser in the closing stages.However, Girona saw out the remaining stages to claim an historic three points against the La Liga champions.
Real Madrid are now eight points behind table toppers Barcelona following the defeat. Barcelona have 28 points while Madrid have 20 points.
