Meet Matt Quaicoe: The highlife singer looking to break into the Ghana music industry

Music, they say is food for the soul, and in Ghana there is no doubt that music is one of the ‘commodities’ that we use to carve our identities.


However, in recent times there has been some form of apathy, with most of us drifting away from our highlifes and hiplifes to the dancehalls and hip hops.

But there is one talented Ghanaian who is aspiring to take the nation back to those days when highlife was our jamming tune.

Matt Quaicoe is a recording artiste who started his music career in the early 1990s, with a focus to do highlife.


However, the road proved to be a tough ground and he has since struggled to make any notable impact in the music industry.


The singer released his first track in the mid ‘90s – titled 'Wobenyinabeto' – which gained some amount of airplay, but he has not been able to reach such heights again, and is now hoping to rebuild his musical career.


Matt Quaicoe released his first album in 1999, the album titled Yensu mma hustlers, before following it up with another in 1993.

But due to a lac k of support, he moved to Italy in 2002 to make some money. However, he is set to return to the country to continue with his music career.


The singer already has collaborations with Lucky Mensah and has also written songs for the likes of Stella Duggan, late Bishop Osei Bonsu and Naana Safowaa, among others.

Originally from Tarkoradi in the Western region, Matt Quaicoe is very passionate about highlife music and wants to revive the genre in Ghana.
