Darkwah Kyei-Darkwah, a model and a son of a renowned Ghanaian broadcaster, Kwesi Kyei-Darkwa also known as KKD has opened up of being gay.
According to a report put up by Peacefmonline.com, Darkwah Kyei-Darkwah first disclosed his sexuality to a global digital magazine, intomore.com.
The model who was featured exclusively in the magazine is said to have admitted that he had a difficult time before coming out about his sexuality.
He also told the magazine in an interview that he used to hide his sexuality from his family since he was living under the roof of his parents.
Darkwah Kyei-Darkwah said he used to be very quiet, obedient and often stay in his room so as he would not be noticed.
But he says he has now come of age and doesn’t feel the need to conform to anybody’s standard in terms of sexuality.
“I realized I was gay in primary school, someone called me gay as an insult and I responded “so what? I was totally fine with it, but others weren’t and that was when the comfort with my sexuality started,” he told the magazine.
The son of the broadcaster also added that, “living under my parents’ roof, I was constantly hiding. I’d get home from school and be incredibly quiet, helpful and obedient. I was playing the role of the ‘ideal son’ so I could just skate by unnoticed" .
He also revealed that he went through a lot of ups and downs, trying out new ways of dressing, reinventing himself and trying out new friendship groups.
KKD’s son was featured on the website alongside other gay models of African descent on issues they face as queer people of colour.
