A group of National Service personnel have kicked against the National Service Scheme’s (NSS) decision to introduce a ‘compulsory’ insurance package.
This comes after the NSS launched a life insurance cover for all National Service personnel meant to cater for them in times of disaster.
A monthly sum of GHc 15 will be deducted from the allowance of each personnel as part of the insurance demands.
However, it appears not all National Service personnel are enthused about the idea.
For some, the NSS failed to consult them before introducing the life insurance package, which they feel amounts to imposition.
One of the aggrieved personnel Gyamfi Shadrack lamented the situation, saying the GHc 15 being deducted from their allowance is too huge and must be optional.
He is quoted as saying by Citi News: “We are against it. They didn’t sit down with us to gather our views. They don’t know whether some personnel have already gotten a private insurance policy.
“This is a way to steal from us. GH¢ 15 is too much. If they want to help us with an insurance policy, they should contact the government and do that for us, but not take money from the meager money we earn. We are against it. It must be optional.”
All over 90,000 personnel of the National Service are included in the ‘compulsory’ insurance cover package.
According to the NSS, the move is for the own good of personnel, as they will be catered for in time of accident or any disaster.
