- President Mahama says he only woke up to watch CNN news after his handover
- He says his daughter was not bothered and was even happy he lost the election
The former leader of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that his 8-year-old daughter, Farida was extremely excited when he lost the 2016 elections.
According to John Mahama, Farida proved to him that she was not bothered about his humiliating defeat to the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
President Mahama who was delivering a lecture in Nigeria recently, said that he woke up a day after his defeat only to turn his television to CNN, since he had no office to go to.
“I remember the day after I had handed over – this was the 8th of January – I woke up in the morning and remembered there was no office to go to. So, I relaxed in my bed and turned on the TV, watching CNN.I spent the whole day watching TV,” he said.
The former NDC leader recounted that he could go for a whole week without seeing his daughter when he was president. But for the first time his daughter returned from school in the afternoon only to meet him lying in bed which was unusual.
“So she asked me, ‘‘Daddy, didn’t you go to the office?’’ I said ‘‘No, don’t you remember that I handed over to President Akufo-Addo yesterday.’’ She said OK; so it means you are not going to the office anymore? I said ‘‘yes, I have no office to go to.’’ And she said, ‘‘so will I be coming home from school and meeting you in the house? I said yes and she said, ‘‘then I am very happy that you lost the elections!,” President Mahama said.
President Mahama after an overwhelming defeat in the December 7, elections, peacefully conceded defeat and handed over to NPP leader, Nana Akufo-Addo on January 7, 2017.
