South Africa's celebrity lesbian couple Thishiwe Ziqubu and Mandisa Nduna have explained their decision to come out.
The actresses said although they have become symbols of the LBGTIQ community in South Africa, they never wanted to make their coming out a statement.
Speaking during a popular radio talk show last week, the couple added that they never felt pressure from friends and family to explain their relationship.
Mandisa, 26, said: "It wasn't a conscious decision to come out because if we were a [male-female] couple we wouldn't have to do that."
She said that the concept of "coming out" was problematic, adding: "It is all to make [male-female] people feel comfortable like I need to explain myself to you. All we are trying to do is live. All we are trying to do is love.”
They added that they refuse to hide their orientation from other people because of societal pressures.
Thishiwe, 32, said: "By hiding who we are as people in the LGBTI community, we give homophobic people more 'power' over us."
