- An NDC member has scoffed at the idea of Mahama leading the 2020 ticket for NDC
- He says the party has now been hijacked by the supporters of the former president
A former consul general to Dubai and member of the National Democratic Congress, Daniel Osei, has said Former President Mahama will offer the party no new direction, YEN.com.gh has gathered.
According to him, the NDC has been hijacked by the ardent supporters of the former president and is currently under the sole leadership of Mahama.
In a report by Prime News Ghana, the NDC member was unimpressed by the party’s Unity Walk held in Cape Coast last weekend.
He described it as ‘disgraceful spectacle’, which will further widen the already existing divisions in the party.
“Look at all the headline stories coming out of the walk. Ask yourselves, was Mahama the only aspirant or party leader who attended the program? Why did they actively prevent others from speaking and the only choice they had was to leave prematurely to avoid a fight?. Will this conduct help unite the party?” Mr. Osei asked.
He noted that the events leading up to the 2016 election by the NDC campaign organizers, hailed John Mahama as already victorious in the elections, yet Mahama was the cause of the worst margin of defeat the NDC ever experienced.
He called the outpour of support for the former president ‘internal vigilantism’; and the constant imposition of Mahama on party members as nonsensical which must be rejected by the party.
Daniel Osei’s comments follow the petition signed by the 10 regional chairmen of the NDC, who are urging the former president to lead the ticket for the party to the 2020 elections.
The NDC regional heads, after a closed-door meeting released a document which showed they have all rallied their support behind the former president, whom they believe is the best candidate to lead them in the next election period.
John Mahama however, has remained silent on whether he has any interest in contesting in the NDC presidential primaries, even as new competitors have emerged to declare their interest in running for president.
