- Darlene Mullins graduated with distinction from university recently
- She earned her degree 55 years after first enrolling
- She left her studies to be with the love of her life
72-year-old Darlene Mullins has proven the old adage that it's never too late to fulfill your dreams.
The grandmother of four graduated from Tennessee State University (US) with an honors degree in African Studies with distinction recently.
What made her achievement even more remarkable is that she attained it after first enrolling 55 years ago.
Her journey at the university started in 1962 but before long, it was cut short. In an interview, she proudly declared: "Love got in the way."
It had to be something extraordinary, and indeed it was. This August, Darlene and her husband John Mullins will celebrate 54 years of marriage.
It all started when she met John, a fellow student. She said: “I thought he was the finest thing walking on the campus." Darlene, a former beauty queen, put aside her studies to take care of their family.
The two later started successful businesses and had two children and several grandchildren. However, Darlene had unfinished business.
Darlene said: “Something kept nagging at me. I always told my children to make sure they finish what they started and I kind of felt it was time to live up to my own advice.”
With John's support, she enrolled again in 2013 to finish her studies. John said: "She gave up everything for me, so now it was my time to follow her."
