Rebecca Akufo-Addo is the first lady of the Republic of Ghana. The first lady of Ghana has been in the public eye for over 30 years of her husband's political career.
In fact, Rebecca Akufo-Addo stood close to her husband through the thorny parts of his presidential ambition. Losing three general elections back to back, Rebecca Akufo-Addo never discouraged her husband from standing for political office.
Things changed in favour of the Akufo-Addos when the NPP got elected to office in 2016. And now that she is the first lady of the republic, we think it's time we assessed reasons why she could be Ghana's first female president.
1. Clean hands
Over 30 years in active politics as wife to the president, Rebecca Akufo-Addo is yet to be uncovered for cases of corruption. The first lady comes out as that female personality in the political landscape with the cleanest slate that anyone could imagine.
2. Less of a talker, much of a worker
One thing we learned about Rebecca Akufo-Addo is that she rarely speaks. The first lady is always working in the background. With just a year since the NPP took office, Rebecca Akufo-Addo has been able to pull off some massive achievements like the construction of school blocks, rehabilitation of the maternity block of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) among others.
3. Beauty versus intelligence
Yes, the first lady is the epitome of a beautiful woman. But more so, she wields a clear appreciation of intelligence. Every presidential candidate would love to have. Yes, she may not served any political office but there is no doubt in our minds that Rebecca Akufo-Addo also bears some traits of a wise presidential hopeful.
4. Moral authority
Being respected for her lack of interest in partisan politics, Rebecca Akufo-Addo will always get her political opponents even vouch for her let alone listen to her. It's no surprise at all that among all top NPP officials she remains one who has never been criticised by political detractors.
5. Heart of the people
Rebecca Akufo-Addo is the first lady of Ghana and definitely wins the heart of Ghanaians. Since elections are mostly about winning the hearts and minds of voters, there's no doubt that the first lady could pull a surprise at any election.
6. Exposure, experience
One requirement of every presidential material is one's exposure and experience in the political space. Having lived closely with a husband who spends most of his life in active politics, Rebecca Akufo-Addo in no doubt has had a full opportunity for understanding the life of a president.
