Italy have failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1958.
The Azzurri lost 1 - 0 on aggregate to Sweden and join the likes of USA, Ivory Coast and Chile in failing to qualify for next year's competition in Russia.
Italy and Sweden played a scoreless tie in the second leg match on Monday at San Siro in Milan with Italy losing 1-0 on aggregate.
Goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon apparently retired from international football after the game. Buffon, who won the World Cup with Italy in 2006, made his national team debut two decades ago.
Sweden reaches its first World Cup since 2006. It was denied two penalties for apparent handballs, first from Matteo Darmian and then from Andrea Barzagli.
Italy is tied with Germany for the second-most World Cup titles, trailing Brazil, who has five.
