- Dr Bawumia at 5th anniversary of the late Alhaji Aliu Mahama eulogized him for grooming to become great politician
- The Vice President says he will forever be grateful to the late leader for recommending him to Akufo-Addo
Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has opened up for the first time on how the late Alhaji Aliu Mahama personally made a case for him to be considered as Vice Presidential candidate to Nana Akufo-Addo.
Dr Mawumia who was eulogizing the late Aliu Mahama, who served as Vice President under John Agyekum kufour revealed that he knew nothing about politics at the time, when Aliu Mahama recommended him to Akufo-Addo.
Speaking at the 5th anniversary of the passing of the former Vice President in Accra on Thursday, Dr. Bawumia submitted that he owes his entire political career to the late Ghanaian leader.
“When I was selected, he knew that I was a novice in politics. And this is why I forever will be grateful to him. He told me I’m going to hold your hand and help you to become Vice President of this country. He put in his boots and we started going round the country”, Dr Bawumia said.
Vice President Bawumia in his address disclosed that Alhaji Aliu Mahama did not end his support for him, but subsequently gave him his initial political training on how to campaign and how to immerse in the political space.
“Amazingly, he was walking and going places that I never thought he would go with us. He was fully part of the campaign. And it was actually when we were going around that I began to have a deeper appreciation,” he noted.
Dr Bawumia also indicated that the former Vice President was the brain behind Akufo-Addo’s Zongo Development Fund, which is aimed at giving new face-lift to various Muslim communities across the country.
This he said was a major strategy by the late Aliu Mahama to disabuse the propaganda being peddled around that the NPP was against people from Zongo communities.
“We see him [Aliu Mahama], as a pioneer as far as our politics is concerned. As Vice President to President Kufuor, he brought something unique to the table”, Dr Bawumia eulogized.
While describing Aliu Mahama as a selfless and kind person, Dr. Bawumia said he will forever be grateful for the tremendous role he played in making him who he is today in Ghana’s politics.
