- The beauty beat 91 other contestants to take the crown in a star-studded event held in Las Vegas, US.
After 39 years, the Miss Universe crown once again returns to South Africa after Miss SA, Demi-Leigh Nel Peters was crowned on on Sunday.
Before being crowned the universe's most beautiful woman, Demi-Leigh was asked: "What quality in yourself are you most proud of, and how will you apply that quality to your time as Miss Universe?"
To loud cheers from the audience, she answered:
As Miss Universe, you have to be confident in who you are as an individual. Miss Universe is a woman who has overcome many fears and by that she is able to help many other women overcome their fears. She is a woman that nothing is ever too much to ask for and I think that is exactly what I am.
The last South African to win the title was Margaret Gardiner in 1978.
Social media has since been abuzz with messages of congratulations streaming in from far and wide.
