Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has shed a little more light on the somewhat veiled society of freemasonry, a society which he has been a member of for a long time.

In speaking about the Freemason society, former president Kufuor referred to the group as one that holds morality to high esteem, but that is also shrouded by allegory and illustrated by symbols.

The former head of state, who's the Senior Grand Warden of the United Grand Lodge of England, said freemasonry is about charity work. Former president Kufuor was speaking at the launch of a book on freemasonry, authored by Abraham Gyesie, held at the British Council.

President Kufuor's opinion of freemasonry is one that's not shared by all. Some Ghanaians have long held the opinion that freemasonry is a secret society which dabbles in the occult arts. This is an opinion shared by many in Ghanaian society.

Nevertheless the author of the book, Mr. Abraham Gyesie, stated that these rumors concerning freemasonry are simply not true. According to Mr. Gyesie, even plain criminals intent on duping people say their Freemasons to escape punishment.

"If you don't believe in God, there's no way you can be a Freemason, pure and simple."

"If for any reason you indicate you want to be a Freemason and you're invited for an interview they'll ask you, 'In whom is your faith, do you believe in God?" He said.

Mr. Gyesie went on to say that if one was to respond to the question by saying, no, then the interview will stop "straightaway". He also stated that whenever a Freemason meeting is convened one is not allowed to discuss politics.
