Former president John Dramani Mahama has congratulated farmers and fishermen across the country on the occasion of Farmers’ Day.
In a post on Facebook, the Mr Mahama praised farmers for providing food for the country and urged Ghanaians to also acknowledge the hardships farmers go through.
“In celebrating our farmers today, let us also remind ourselves of the difficulties they confront in order to provide food for the nation and contribute to our foreign exchange earnings.
“My administration started working on addressing issues of access to Finance and Mechanized Equipment, to help boost productivity and profits. We reinvigorated the Agricultural Mechanisation Centres and launched a Farmer Services Centre Programme, that was going to make available affordable and modern equipment to all farmers across the country,” the former Ghana leader said.
Ghana is today marking the 33rd edition of the National Farmers’ Day event aimed at rewarding farmers who have been outstanding in their respective areas.
In all about 90 farmers are expected to be honoured for their contribution towards the development of the agricultural sector.
This year’ ceremony is being held at the in the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi. The theme for this year’s event is: “Planting for Food and Jobs”.
