- A Zimbabwean journalist recalled an incident involving Grace Mugabe
- She allegedly caused the then foreign affairs minister to cower in fear
- His story has gone viral
Former Zimbabwean First Lady Grace Mugabe had a terrifying reputation at the height of her powers and a journalist's story confirms this.
Writing in the Zimbabwean paper The Standard recently, Foster Dongozi recalled an incident involving Grace and the then foreign affairs minister, the late Stanislaus Mudenge.
Dongozi was part of the press team that accompanied the Mugabes in an official trip to Paris in 1997. He was chatting to Mudenge in a hotel lobby when Grace walked in.
Dongozi recalled Grace asking Mudenge:
Murikupira midzimu yekupi? (What traditional rituals are you conducting?)
He said Mudenge, whom he described as a "giant man with a booming voice," immediately lost his composure and looked flustered.
Zimbabwe’s chief diplomat at the time for all his size, appeared to turn grey before he sprang up with the agility of a gazelle.
“I am going!” he all but screamed at me curtly as he made a beeline towards Grace and appeared to be apologising profusely for dereliction of duty.
Such was the power Grace held that even grown men in powerful positions ended up literally prostrating in front of her, Dongozi said. His story immediately went viral.
