-The mandatory insurance package for NSS personnel has been made optional
-This follows a broader consultation meeting between the NSS secretariat and stakeholders
-A statement to this effect has been released
The National Service Scheme (NSS) has rescinded its decision to compulsorily enroll all service personnel on an insurance package.
Instead of the package being mandatory, as originally proposed, the has now made it optional.
The NSS secretariat had at the start of the 2017/2018 national service year hinted of plans to compulsorily deduct GHC15 from the GH559 allowance given to personnel as insurance.
The package, according to the NSS secretariat, was to cushion any of the over 90,000 personnel currently deployed in times of accidents in their line of duty.
But some personnel kicked against saying the package was being imposed on them.
Many of the agitators suggested the package should rather be optional than mandatory.
The secretariat has heeded this call and has now made it optional after a broader stakeholder consultation meeting.
A statement from the scheme indicated that the management has suspended the mandatory monthly deduction of GHC 15 from personnel allowance.
