Currently, over 400 private security firms registered in Ghana but the UN fears that their numbers overshadow that of the total number of police officials in Ghana.

Member of the delegation, Patricia Arias, has also revealed that the number also includes that of illegal private security officials.

“The Working Group is concerned with the sheer number of private security personnel in comparison with the number of police personnel. It is also concerned with the number of private security companies operating throughout the country illegally,” she said.

The concern by the United Nations follows other grave concerns over the emergence of vigilante groups which are mostly supportive of the government.
