Teachers across the country are threatening to embark on a nationwide strike following the non-payment of allowances amounting to 50 million cedis.

All three teacher unions in the country including the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) say attempts to getting government pay these arrears have proven unsuccessful.The strike, according to these aggrieved teachers, will begin from the second term of the academic calendar which begins from next week.

Incoming president of the national association of graduate teachers, Angel Carbonu says teachers are very frustrated with government.

“We served notice to the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission indicating that we have come to the end of the road. We have made these demands for a while, but we are not getting positive results so come this term, we will be taking industrial action to push further our demands,” he stated in an interview with Citifmonline.

Government is yet to react to the threat of these teachers as the strike is bound to have a terrible effect on teaching and learning in the second term of the academic calendar.
