"Bizarre" statue of Michael Essien causes 'serious' discussion on social media

A statue of Ghanaian International footballer and former Chelsea midfielder, Michale Essien has caused a stir on social media with many fans and followers of the football icon clamoring for the head of the sculptors over the work.

The statue which has been mounted on the Boadi road in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, has generated a lot of attention after it found its way on to the internet.

Many fans of the former Chelsea player argued that the sculptor who is yet to be known did a ‘shoddy’ job with the statue of Michael Essien who had contributed a lot to Ghana football.

Many people took to their social media handles to ‘mock’ the work of the sculptor for putting up such a statue which looked nothing like the experienced footballer.

The Twitter handle of football website, Goal.com in reacting to the statue wrote, “A statue of former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien has come to light... and it's just a little bit scary”.

Another Twitter user commented, “A football statue of Michael Essien has just been made that's worse than Cristiano Ronaldo's and Diego Maradona's ...

Michael Essien started his professional footballing career playing for Ghana Premier League side, Liberty Professionals, before making a big jump to Europe where he played for renowned football clubs including Chelsea, Real Madrid and AC Milan.

He went on to win lots of accolades and trophies for the clubs he played for.

Michael Essien was part of the Black Stars team that qualified Ghana for its first ever World Cup in 2006 and helped the team reach the finals of the 2010 African Cup of Nations.
