There has been a raging debate over the collection of TV licences by the state broadcaster, Ghana Television (GTV) for sometime now.
Act 1966 (NLC Decree 89), states that Ghanaian households and individuals owning television sets are to pay designated fees.
Currently the fees are pegged between GH¢36 and GH¢60 for one or more TV sets and GHc60 to GHc240 for TV repairers and sellers. Commercial TV operators are to pay GHc36 per annum for each TV set.
As part of moves to enforce the law, the Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, recently set up a court for the prosecution of those who will fail to abide by the provisions of the act.
This rekindled the debate with many Ghanaians expressing their disagreement with the special TV court and the whole TV licence collection idea.
Per the arrangements, GTV is supposed to take the bigger chunk of the revenue that will be generated and a lot of people simply do not buy that.
While some of these critics have cited the lack of quality programmes on GTV for their decision not to pay, others are pointing to the many errors which are made on station including spelling mistakes.
Interestingly, the latter reason has got some social media and many have joined in to mock the station of the nation.
YEN.com.Gh has put together some of these pictures for your viewing pleasure as GTV presenters would say:
1. Amakye Dede the Black Stars captain?
Who were his playing mates?
2. GTV turned gospel musician Yaw Sarpong into a wrestler:
3. Efya has a collabo with Rihanna?
And I didn't know of it. I think I should up my music game.
4 Is the total percentage not supposed to be 100?
So who took the 1% and to where?
5. Fouls or fowls?:
Very soon, GTV will make players commit 'goats' in football
6. It's Chile not 'Chilly':
7. So they don't know the difference between Asamoah Gyan and Dede Ayew?
Even little kids in Ghana know the difference
8. Killed but not dead?
11 officers were killed but only four died. Isn't that miraculous?
10. Reapet paa?
11. And this:
A lot of unexplained breaks in transmission.
So the question is, should GTV be paid any TV licence?
