- The timeline for Guantanamo Bay ex-convicts has expired
- Government is yet to decide the fate of these ex-convicts
All ex-convicts from Guantanamo Bay have exhausted their stay here in Ghana. The men who were repatriated to Ghana were described as a threat to national security.
The erstwhile Mahama administration described the repatriation of the Guantanamo Bay ex-convicts as a memorandum of understanding between Ghana and the United States of America.
Minister of foreign affairs, Shirley Ayorkor Botchway confirmed the expiration of their stay in parliament stating that the Nana Addo administration never terminated its agreement with the US government.
“Mr Speaker, we have not changed anything. In the note verbale that were exchanged between the two countries. Indeed there was no agreement. The whole transaction was done through what we call a note verbal from both sides. What we have done is to attach all those documents," she stated.
So far, it remains unsure the fate of these two ex-convicts who had earlier stated that living in Ghana has been a joyous moment for them and that they have been able to re-integrate with the Ghanaian society.
