Former president of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has opened up on the exact nature of his relations with Former President Jerry John Rawlings.
In an interview with Ghana Television (GTV), he stated that he has studied Rawlings’ general behavior and has therefore learnt to act accordingly.
In that respect, he added, he (Mahama) has nothing against Rawlings. His remarks were in response allegations of bad blood between the former presidents.
A video clip, trending on social media allegedly created the impression that the two were at ‘war’ with each other, even though they both belonged to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The video, was allegedly taken at the 25th anniversary of 4th Republic Celebration held at the Independence Square on Sunday January 7, 2018.
In the video, Mahama, who appeared to have arrived earlier, was captured exchanging pleasantries with dignitaries, including former President Kufuor, as they passed by him.
Rawlings was however, captured in the video, arrived with a stern face and hurriedly shook Mahama’s hand. Mahama however debunked the assertion that all was not well between them.
He claimed they enjoyed good relations and that Ghanaians should have realized Rawlings’ personality by now.
“With President Rawlings we have had a good relation…Recently there have been some speculation in the media and all that. We should understand the kind of person President Rawlings is….sometimes he is in the mood where he doesn't want to engage in any kind of conversation and so recently at the Thanksgiving they were giving all kinds of interpretation to the handshakes.”
"I mean there are occasions where you don’t know what mood he is…greets military style and he passes but there are some other occasions where I met him in Kpando and we had a very warm handshake and we exchanged pleasantries.
There are times you sit next to him and he is not in the mood to speak or to talk but at other times you sit next to him and he is in the mood to talk,” stated.
John Mahama went on to say that Jerry Rawlings gave him several opportunities in life, such as appointing him as Communications Minister during his (Rawlings) tenure as president.
For these reasons, he said, he appreciates the role of the former president in his life.
