- It has been gathered that the choice for Martin Amidu as special prosecutor was a tough one
- Martin Amidu is feared to be very partisan and vengeful in his line of duty
YEN.com.gh is learning that the decision to settle on Martin Amidu followed hours of emergency cabinet meetings at the Flagstaff House.
The choice for the special prosecutor sparked huge outrage among members of the opposition party who say Martin Amidu's appointment has the potential of witch hunting members of the opposition party that he, Martin Amidu, had issues with.
So far, it is expected that embattled businessman, Alfred Woyome could be the center of attraction on Amidu's radar as well as the former transport minister, Dzifa Attivor, who tendered in her resignation over the bus re-branding scandal. The top NDC official had also begged supporters of the NDC to vote for Mahama or risk having her jailed by the NPP.
Meanwhile, former president of the republic, Jerry John Rawlings has expressed joy over the appointment of Martin Amidu as special prosecutor.
“Mr. Amidu has proven to be a fearless anti-corruption crusader whose pursuit of truth and justice has won him national admiration. I call on all Ghanaians to offer the appointee the required support and information in pursuit of what will undoubtedly be a challenging role,” Jerry Rawlings stated.
Martin Amidu's selection kills earlier claims that the president had settled on lawyer Akoto Ampaw as special prosecutor. The selection of Martin Amidu has sparked political commotion following the well-known history of Martin Amidu fighting against corruption cases in the country.
The appointment of Martin Amidu has been described by former CHRAJ boss, Emile Short as the best and clever choice considering his independence and strife for justice. When fully operational, the Special Prosecutor’s office will be independent of the Executive, which observers believe will allow it to adequately deal with corruption-related issues which have plagued past governments.
