- Some NDC stalwarts have described Martin Amidu as distinguished
- Mr. Amidu was widely commended and celebrated for his fight against corruption, when he single-handedly pursued known NDC businessman Alfred Woyome
Member of Parliament for the Tamale Central Constituency, Inusah Fuseni, has described as welcoming news the President’s nomination of Martin Amidu as Ghana’s first ever Special Prosecutor.
Mr Amidu was announced as President Akufo-Addo’s choice for the newly created office of the Special Prosecutor on Thursday after a cabinet meeting at the Flagstaff House.
The former Attorney-General is known to be a very strict man when it comes to the fight against corruption.
However, despite his track record of openly criticizing the erstwhile John Mahama government, MP for Tamale Central, Mr Fuseni believes Mr Amidu will duly deliver.
According to the NDC MP, the nominated Special Prosecutor has shown over the years that he means well for the country.
He, however, advised Mr Amidu not to take sides when it comes to prosecuting members of the various political parties, insisting he must give his all in the fight against corruption.
“I think that it is a refreshing news in 2018. It appears to me that the 2018 appointment of Martin Amidu clearly shows that Nana Akufo-Addo might want to change the course and look at an all-inclusive government.
“Martin Amidu has also distinguished himself and has shown that he is beyond control and that is a plus for him. I have no doubt in my mind that if he gets the approval from Parliament he will not look at one side. He will look at both sides and will pursue corruption as it ought to be pursued,” he told Citi FM.
Another top NDC member who is in full support of Mr Amidu’s appointment is former National Security Adviser, Brigadier General Nunoo Mensah.
In an interview monitored by YEN.com.gh, the former soldier also opined that the choice of Amidu is a “smart move”.
“It is a very smart move by the President to appoint Martin Amidu who is a known NDC man. If it was a man who had NPP sympathy one would have thought that he will have NPP leanings towards people who will be incriminated. But if you appoint a man like Martin Amidu who is a very strict person as far as the law is concerned, it is a very smart move on the part the President. He is one of the finest people I have worked with and I know he will pursue justice whatever the case is,” Nunoo Mensah told Citi News in an interview
The Office of the Special Prosecutor is one of the major ways by which the New Patriotic Party government promised to deal with corruption within government.
The Special Prosecutor is expected to take legal action against past and present government officers believed to have engaged in acts of corruption while in office.
