Recently, bleaching has become a fashion among the youth at a rather an alarming rate.
Meanwhile, the side effects of bleaching, according to medical officers, are grievous and they should be of much concern to anyone interested in bleaching.
A woman, who looks to be her late sixties has disclosed that she went totally blind after she had bleached her skin for some time.
It took her the intervention of her children who paid the sum of GHC8,000 to doctors at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for an eye surgery.
She spoke in a recorded interview with Berla Mundi, which was later shown on the Late Afternoon Show aired on GH One TV on Monday.
Apparently, the hydroquinone which is a bleaching agent in the cream she was using then came into contact with her eyes and that affected her so badly.
She revealed that her quest to get fair in her early 20s moved her to patronage any new bleaching cream that introduced onto the market from Abidjan, in Cote d'Ivoire.
Cote d’Ivoire is the country noted for producing most of the body creams on the Ghanaian market.

Speaking in the Ga language, she said: “I was a very beautiful woman when I was a young girl and I wanted to be more beautiful and fair and so anytime I hear about a new bleaching cream on the market, I went in for it. But later, I went blind because the cream went into my eyes.”
After her surgery at Korle Bu, the doctors advised her to stay clear off bleaching creams because if she doesn’t and later gets blind again, that would be for life.
Therefore, she bade good bye to all bleaching creams for fear of going blind again, however, her skin has also been affected with a permanent damage.
Auntie Kai, as she is called, now has brutally burnt skin especially her face, making her a little deformed at her cheeks and eyes.
The older woman further advised all young ladies to desist from bleaching because in her own words: “There is no benefit in bleaching, only regrets and skin infection in the long run.”
The Monday edition of the ‘Late Afternoon Show’ had medical doctors including Dr Hannah-Lisa Tetteh, as guests.
She explained that the hydroquinone agent contained in bleaching creams not only affect the eyes but also other organs of the body which can cause serious health problems such as hypertension, diabetes, and even mental illness.
