- An 8 year old boy, Wang Fuman, arrived at school with his hair frozen due to his hour long walk in sub-zero temperatures
- The social media post has prompted over 2, 159,100.58 yuan (over Ghc1,5m) in donations
- The story has brought the socio-economic incongruities in China
This story has tugged at the heartstrings of the Chinese public. People have rallied to help the poor boy who has to walk 4.5km to school every day.
YEN.com.gh has looked into the picture of the boy with the frozen hair went viral this week. The picture depicted Fuman whose walk to school, in the Southern Yunnan province, in minus nine degree weather resulting in both his hair and eyebrows being coated with ice. He then had to write an exam in a building without heating.
This unassuming picture has not only drummed up support and donations for the school and for Fuman, but it has also served to highlight the major wealth gap in China.
Fuman comes from an underprivileged family where his father is a migrant worker and he lives in a mud house with his sister and grandmother. Despite his meagre living conditions he is a good student with great potential.
The Yunnan and Zhaotong Youth Development Foundation has received donations and will manage the funds, totalling almost Ghc1,5m on behalf of the family and the school. 500 yuan (Ghc360) has been allocated for each student at the Zhuanshanbao Primary School. The charity organisation claimed to disclose further usage of the funds.
There has been some controversy surrounding the funds. Concerns regarding the charity’s management of the donations are being raised. Fear of misappropriation of the funds has prohibited some altruists from actively donating to the cause.
The Zhaotong Foundation responded to critics saying that not all of the donations are destined for Fuman, but will be distributed to help other impoverished children too.
