- President Akufo-Addo has indicated his willingness to embrace an opportunity to contest as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer for the 2020 elections
- The President made this known at his second Media Encounter at the Flagstaff House
President Akufo-Addo says he is ready to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2020 elections if members of the party deem him fit.
According to him, he has no problem seeking re-election in 2020, but will first need the NPP’s delegates to renew his position as flagbearer of the party.
The President made this known during his second encounter with the media held at the Flagstaff House on Wednesday, January 18, 2018.
“I do not have a difficulty facing the Ghanaian people. I have been trying to do so all my life in various degrees of success and I do not have any difficulty, and especially with the opportunity that has been given me to serve them in this capacity.
“If at the end of the day, the NPP decides they want to renew my flagbearership and to go contest the country, I will do so and I will do so with a great deal of confidence,” he said.
Akufo-Addo’s comments seem to be a direct reply to those who suggested he will be a president for just one term.
Many have claimed that the 72-year-old could step down after his current four-year term due to his age and health concern.
Reports from certain quarters went on to suggest that Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will lead the NPP come 2020.
However, all that has now been put to bed with Akufo-Addo confirming his readiness to seek re-election after his current term.
