The University of Ghana has released the new grading system to be used in the academic year of 2018/2019.

Grading system

The University of Ghana new grading system is as follows.

  • B+ 75-79 3.5
  • B 70-74 3.0
  • C+ 65-69 2.5
  • C 60-64 2.0
  • D+ 55-59 1.5
  • D 50-54 1.0
  • E 45-49 0.5
  • F 0-44 0
  • X 0 0
  • Z 0 0
  • I 0 0
  • Y 0 0
  • AUDI 0 0

Grade Interpretation and Requirements

The new University of Ghana grading system is so specific. With it comes a guideline to be followed when deciding on the grade a candidate is to be awarded. The guide is also important to candidates as it may be used as a guide to help them in revision and ultimately when attempting their exams.

A - Outstanding

  • In-depth knowledge of the subject
  • Discerning insight and originality of ideas
  • The ideas need to be organized and are easily understandable.
  • The ideas need to be organized and reasoned out logically
  • The work should be of such a high quality coupled with minimal grammatical and typographical errors.

B+ - Very good

  • A clear understanding of the subject matter but may( the student shows a clear grasp of the subject but may fall short of producing an OUTSTANDING answer)
  • The ideas organized in a systemic manner and reasonably presented
  • Ideas expressed clearly.

B - Good

  • Knowledge of the subject matter is above average.
  • The concepts are well organized. The candidate has content.
  • A glimmer of originality coupled with brilliance.
  • Allowable level of grammatical and typographical errors.

C+ - Fairly good

  • Above average understanding of the subject.
  • Shows a slight deficiency in organization and presentation of their ideas.
  • Allowable level of grammatical and typographical errors

C - Average

D+ - Below average

  • Faint understanding of the subject
  • Weak in organization and presentation
  • Notable grammatical and typographical errors

D - marginal

  • Very Faint understanding of the subject
  • Very weak in organization and presentation
  • Notable grammatical and typographical errors

E Unsatisfactory

  • Poor understanding of the subject
  • Poor in organization and presentation
  • A lot of grammatical and typographical errors

F Fail

  • Very poor understanding of the subject
  • Very poor in organization and presentation
  • A lot of grammatical and typographical error

Classification of Grades

The University of Ghana new grading system classified grades into 6 categories;

  • Pass grades – these category consists of grade A to grade D
  • Fail grade ¬– the grades that fall within this category are grades E, F, X, Z. it is important to note that even though F is a failure grade, there are courses that do not require you to retake the exam once you attain the grade. You are adjudged to have fulfilled the prerequisite of that course
  • Continuing grade – this s the grade awarded to a person who is embarking on a unit that runs for two semesters. It is characterized as grade Y
  • Audit grade – this is a special king of grade that is awarded for the attendance of lectures if the examination cannot be undertaken for any good reason. The grade is characterized as AUDI

Grade for not completing the course – this grade is divided further to two categories and is only awarded at the discretion of the Board of Examiners.

  • Grade I- this is awarded when the student is unable to complete a certain course but with sufficient reason. The affected student is however obliged to complete the course the next time it is available.
  • Grade X – this is awarded when the reasons given by the student is unsatisfactory.
  • Disqualification grade – a disqualification grade is awarded when there is sufficient proof of examination malpractices or offences. Once the grade is awarded, the affected person may be barred from taking ANY/ALL University examinations for a period of time or indefinite suspension or an expulsion from the institution altogether. It is only the Board of Examiners who can award a disqualification grade. The grade is denoted by the letter Z

Classification of the University Of Ghana Class Grading

The University of Ghana class grading for the degrees they offer is divided into six categories. The class one is placed in depends on Final Grade Point Averages (FGPA). The Final Grade Point Average is Grade Point Average (CGPA) for all the courses that the student has undertaken to complete their studies.

First Class - 3.60-4.0

Second Class (Upper Division) - 3.0-3.59

Second Class (Lower Division) - 2.0-2.99

Third Class - 1.50-1.99

Pass - 1.00-1.49

Fail - 0.00-0.99
