Ghanaians on social media are currently divided on which path to chart following Kennedy’s Agyapong’s criticism of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) over job creation.
The Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, cast doubts over government’s claim that it has created lots of jobs.
The lawmaker laid into his own government, insisting not everything it does can be considered as a job.
This comes after government claimed that it has created so many jobs for the unemployed youth in the country through some initiatives.
Earlier this year, the Minister for Food and Agriculture claimed his sector has created a whopping 745,000 jobs in 2017, as a result of the government's Planting for Food and Jobs programme.
However, Mr. Agyapong believes not everything government does can be counted as a job and has charged President Akufo-Addo to take the subject of job creation very serious.
He added that graduates are also struggling to get jobs, saying any graduate who earns GHc400 or less cannot be considered to be employed.
"If US with 300m people created 200,000 jobs in 2017, how did Ghana, with our population create 745,000 jobs under one sector?” the maverick MP asked rhetorically.
"People are suffering. See, unemployment is ubiquitous. Even though President is still working and things will change, we must be truthful about jobs… How can you pay graduates GH¢400 a month and say you have created jobs.
"Even my driver how much do I pay him? My driver is a young man. I pay him GH¢1500 so that he too can do something for himself, so please, we must get serious about job creation."
The criticism from the NPP MP on his own government had led to many Ghanaians also airing their views on social media (Facebook).
While some agreed that the current government has not done enough about job creation, others maintained that it was too early to judge.
One Samuel Mona said: “Bam! The truth has fallen. Hon, we need one of your type in Flagstaff house, one in the judiciary, 10 in parliament and one in each region in Ghana to keep the fire burning. Then there won't be any problem in Ghana.”
Another man called Nana Kwaku Opoku said: “How I wish we have 20 kinds of this man in our motherland Ghana.”
Another Facebook user with the name Nana Yaw added: “The most honest NPP man always tell the truth, 400gh per month and your girlfriend is that type demand how are you going to survive?”
Nana Michaels had a totally different opinion and stated: “Me mmom de3...I will choose GH400 over embargo on employment. It is not the best but it better than what existed between 2013 and 2016...Jeeeezzz.Govt should do more...”
