The Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) has confirmed that the middle-aged woman was arrested when she was going through arrival formalities at the Kotoka International Airport.

"Mrs. Zena on interrogation admitted ownership of the parcel and confessed that they were given to her by one Mandanje Omari in Tanzania to be delivered to someone in Accra for an undisclosed amount of money," the Board said.

So far, it remains unknown how the Tanzanian woman got hold of the hard drugs as there are suspicions it could have been given to her as a parcel. She was jailed for 5 years.A recent report shows that Ghana and Nigeria are the two top countries with most cases of smuggled drugs.

According to the report, Ghana and Nigeria were the leading sub-Saharan countries most prone to this development and that the main trafficking route continues to be from West Africa to South America and Latin America.

The report also ranks Ghana the 20th in the world when it comes to the consumption of cocaine - a development which comes at a time when the government is putting structures in place to clamp down on the illicit drug trafficking.

It has also emerged that close to 300,000 thousand Ghanaians are currently sniffing cocaine or using it in other devious forms. This revelation is documented to have skyrocketed the prevalence of Hepatitis B in sub-Saharan Africa as most of the drug abusers rely on the use of syringes to satisfy their urge.
