Out of 180 countries considered, Ghana managed to place 81, representing a huge drop from last year’s CPI report.

In 2016, Ghana was ranked 70 after scoring 43 points, but that has also dropped per the 2017 CPI report, with the nation now scoring 40.

However, Rawlings insists he is unaware of the latest index and how it portrays the current government.

Speaking to Accra-based Starr FM following a state burial organised for the late Professor Francis Kofi Allotey on Friday, the ex-president said: “I am not aware of it [the Corruption Perception Index]. Let me go and read it, then I comment on it.”

He further gave his opinion on whether the current government is actually taking the fight against corruption very seriously.

According to him, President Akufo-Addo’s appointment of Martin Amidu as Special Prosecutor shows he is committed to reducing the canker.

Mr. Amidu was sworn-in as Ghana’s first ever Special Prosecutor on Friday after his nomination was unanimously approved by Parliament last Tuesday.

The former Attorney-General is expected to take on public and government officials who have used their offices to siphon the state’s assets or coffers.

Mr. Rawlings believes the President was right to choose Amidu as Special Prosecutor, but pointed out that he would only succeed if “we all get involved.”

He added that the Special Prosecutor will help “restore integrity back into governance; that we can’t get into government with impunity to steal and corrupt institutions and go with it.”
