I am not a big fan of action movies, so I wasn’t really caught up with the Black Panther movie: What's this craze all about? Until I heard it’s an all-black superhero and that it features many successful black casts including the director. Furthermore, I wanted to make sure that Lupita Nyong'o could live up to all her glory days of winning an Oscar. Based on its captivating storyline, high grossing amount, media craze and an exceptional performance by all the cast members: Black Panther has made history.
Black Panther movie success
What makes Black Panther 2018 one of the game changers in the film industry is that despite the leading casts being black, it has received various positive reviews from movie critics and it was also among the most anticipated releases with presale tickets getting outsold way before the black panther release date. The Black Panther trailer and advance ticket sales helped create a major buzz by giving a glimpse of the action-packed Marvel movie that dives head-on into African culture and stories that prove that black stars can fare well internationally.

But, perhaps where they got it right was the fact that the superhero (Chadwick Boseman) is the leader of any African Country (Wakanda) that is rich, prosperous and has a beautiful terrain. Instead of the poverty-stricken state that most Hollywood movies portray. Wakanda has advanced technology and even figured out how to use the vibranium meteor without asking for help outside their kingdom which could have exposed them- something their ancestors had shielded them over the centuries.
Most comic book based movies tend to allow the superhero-which in most cases is the man- to shine. But, what makes the Black Panther the movie relatable to many of its fans is that while the male lead is the superhero, the women in the Black Panther cast are not upstaged but instead they are elevated, and their roles in the movie take centre stage. There’s the beautiful Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o) who acts as a spy and captures the love interest of the king. Okoye (Danai Gurira) the head in charge of Dora Milage which is a special force group and Queen Mother Ramonda played by Angela Bassett are just a few of the females who have upstaged their male counterparts in the black panther marvel. The roles of the women of the Black Panther movie are clear: they intelligent warriors that don’t need a man to save them.
Black Panther movie displays African fashion
Even before the countdown to the Black Panther premier date, the trailer had already set the fashion pace. Royalty and beauty were to be represented in a way that showcases fashion in African culture. Post of memes of African outfits was met with viral acclaim as a declaration of the fashion to expect during the premiere. People from different parts of the world of every colour have been wearing their Wakanda inspired outfits to the Black Panther premier and posting their selfies on various social media platforms. Heroic stories have always captured many viewers interest making them amongst the highest grossing and Black Panther movie has not disappointed. In fact, it has surpassed the expectations in terms of grossing and gender inequality in Hollywood. While the success of one black movie is not going to eradicate poverty in Africa, gender inequality and racial issues in America, Black Panther is a step in the right direction.
