- The Eastern Regional Police PRO has confirmed the incident in a radio interview
The Eastern Regional Command is on the hunt for a gang of four armed men who went on a robbery spree in Koforidua on Tuesday, February 27.
Wielding 'a small black metallic pistol, cutlasses, knife', among others, the gang succeeded in robbing victims of items ranging from cash, electronics gadgets, footwear and clothes, to foodstuff.
Before robbing their victims, the suspected robbers, YEN.com.gh understands, subjected their victims to severe beatings.
Confirming the incident in an interview on Citi FM, the Eastern Regional Police PRO, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, indicated that the robbers carried out their attacks on foot.
According to him, the Police received a distress call at about 12:45am on February 27 concerning a robber at Okorase, a suburb of Koforidua.
A patrol team was dispatched to the scene and upon their arrival, the team found Ernest Donkor Attiklo and his wife Joana Opoku.
The team detected that the robbers who had covered their mouths with ‘bandana’ broke the main door of the victims' house with a cement block, tied up Joana with net sponge, and held Ernest hostage before taking away their 40 inches flat screen Akai TV, HP laptop, four mobile phones, 4 GB pen drive, wedding ring of Ernest Donkor, and an amount of GHC 170.
“The robbers also attacked victim Gifty Asante age 30 of the same house by breaking her main door with a cement block and made away with an Acer laptop, mobile phones and cash the sum of GHc 215,” ASP Tetteh added.
Using the same strategy, the gang attempted, at about 01:20am, to rob another house at Peace Hill SHS in the same suburb.
But after breaking into the house of Patrick Bekoe and his wife Margaret Oti, the victims were able to shout to make their neighbors to come out forcing the robbers to flee without taking anything.
Ten minutes later, ASP Tetteh narrated, the robbers stormed a house opposite Menalic Clinic, also at Okorase.
They broke in, tied one Asiwome Tei-Mati with his own cloth before making away with his HP laptop, laptop bag, two mobile phones including a Samsung S7, desert boot, phone charger and the sum of GHc 5.
"The same robbers also attacked Emmanuel Dornor age 26, the landlord, by breaking his metal door through same means and made away with his iPhone 5s, and an Infinix Hot phone belonging to victim Grace age 22. It was noted that the robbers were on foot in their operation,” the Eastern Regional Police PRO added.
The brazen nature of the robbery has reportedly led to fear among some residents but ASP assured that the police were doing everything possible to ensure their safety.
The incident comes at a time when there seems to be a sharp rise in armed robbery cases in Ghana.
