Ghana’s biggest night in music, popularly known as the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards is fast-approaching and many players, especially the artistes, are gearing up for the night of their lives.
The nominees have already been announced and the quest for recognition and celebration has started in earnest since all the nominees are hopeful of winning laurels at the ceremony.
Even though this year’s edition of the VGMAs is its 19th ever since its inception, this year's promises an unforgettable night with the information that has been gathered so far.
Among the nominees were last year’s 'Artiste of the Year' winner, Joe Mettle, Highest' album maker, Sarkodie, award-winning dancehall acts, Stonebwoy and Samini and a host of other ‘year-on-year’ nominees.
This year’s awards night which promises to have a twist to it announced among the nominees, 'One Corner' hitmaker, Patapaa Amisty, late dancehall act, Ebony Reigns, known in real life as Priscilla Opoku-Kwarteng and longtime absentee, Charles Nii Armah Mensah, popularly known as Shatta Wale.
Today, YEN.com.gh brings you 4 reasons Shatta Wale, late Ebony and Patapaa could win big at this year’s VGMA’s
1. All the artistes have recorded hit songs
From 'Taking Over' to 'One Corner' to 'Hustle', all three songs from the artistes have been received well by many Ghanaians and even by Africans in the diaspora. These songs have resonated so well with many Ghanaians that right from the get go, they were destined for greatness.
Patapaa’s 'One Corner' came to be associated with a weird dance while Ebony’s 'Hustle' became an anthem for the many market women in the country. Self-proclaimed dancehall act, Shatta Wale’s 'Taking Over' received countless airtime plays.
2. All three acts are making their first entry to some extent into the ceremony
With the exception of Shatta Wale, who is making a return to the awards ceremony after a long stint on the sidelines, both Patapaa and late Ebony would be making their first entry into the big leagues of music award ceremonies in Ghana.
More often than not, the first entrants walk away with laurels ahead of the more ‘regular entrants’.
3. All three acts have huge followings
Without an iota of doubt, it is an established fact that Ebony, Patapaa and Shatta Wale have the backing of the populace due to the way their songs went viral.
All artistes are well-known for their stagecraft and it goes a long way to buttress the point that, they are going to give the other competitors in their categories a run for their monies.
Judging by the fact that the general public has a say in who wins or not, it would be little wonder to see the votes pour in for these 3 musicians.
4. All three artistes made major headlines in 2017
Arguably, the three musicians appeared in the news more than any of their colleagues. Some of the news bordered on the personal life of the musicians while others were news linked to the artistes.
Shatta Wale and Ebony were predominantly noted for ‘bad press’ but they invariably pushed them into the media. Most of the news surrounding the acts caused debate on social media and increased their popularity.
If popular votes are anything to go by, the artistes are going to have the votes flowing in their favor.
