Chief Statistician at the Ghana Statistical Service, David Kombat, says that Ghana's population currently stands at 29.6 million as against 24.6 million in 2010.
Speaking in an interview with the Ghanaian Times newspaper, the chief statistician revealed that almost half of the total population is made of young people between the ages of 1 to 29.
According to him, the statistics call for some urgent steps to deal with recent challenges faced the youth in the country.
So far, checks by YEN.com.gh show that the main issues confronting Ghana's youthful population have been the scramble for limited jobs.
In fact, the spate of unemployment in the country has been described by President Akufo-Addo as "a national security issue."
To this effect, the president has committed to creating about 100,000 new jobs by the end of the year through the Builder's Corps which aims to link Graduates with ready and available jobs.
Under the menace of unemployment has also been the increase in cases of armed robbery and other social vices. In the beginning of March alone, there have been troubling cases of daylight armed robbery across the country mostly leading to the death of victims.
A growing youthful population has also seen Ghana record high cases diseases. According to the Ghana AIDS Commission, the prevalence of HIV has risen sharply as the years go by.
The Chief Statistician has, therefore, expressed the need for access to quality education and healthcare, especially reproductive health and the need to empower women economically, with entrepreneurial skills and development to drive economic growth.
High population growth in Ghana has always been termed a necessary evil for the country.
This is because of the potential of skills and their capacity to contribute immensely to the country's economy.
