Pastor Chris' "men are masters" message trends again on social media

- A message by Nigerian televangelist, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, to the effect that husbands are superior to wives in marriage is trending again online, two years after it was first preached

- Some social media users have re-embraced the message, as they push back against the activities of some self-styled "feminists" online

- The move comes after a member of the so-called Pepper Dem Ministries "feminists" group suggested that Ghanaian women who chose to cook for their husbands were "slaving away" can report that a 2016 message by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, the Nigerian founder of the Christ Embassy Church, is trending again on social.

The message which states that husbands are superior to their wives in marriages is being wildly shared by some Ghanaian social media users.

In the message, which was delivered to church members, Pastor Chris said that wives should not deem themselves equal to their husbands in marriages because their husbands are their masters.

"Husband does not mean the male partner in a marriage, husband means master. The reason for most problems in Christian marriages is the fact that women refute God’s definition of marriage and form theirs. They believe they are equal partners.

"If most women had their fathers bold enough to talk to them, they will be very successful in their marriage and they will be very happy people. Most women have never been taught by their parents, their fathers particularly and that’s their biggest problem because they don’t know who a man is, they think he is another woman," he stated.

Citing biblical references, the renowned pastor explained that God only created women because of man and that the original idea was for woman to help man and not be his"partner or a supervisor or a special advisor or someone to tell him what to do".

"Let me tell you, no husband wants another mother, he has had one all his life. He doesn’t want an older sister, he probably had one. Your secret is in obedience, your secret is in listening to your husband, your secret is in doing the things that please him.

"When you don’t do the things that please him, you take the role of a mother or of an older sister. A man loves the one he serves (God) and the one that serves him (a good wife). He fights the one that wants to be at the same level with him (a rebellious wife)," he said.

The issue of women's roles in marriages has been the subject of intense public debate in recent times, especially as it relates to cooking.

The message from Pastor Chris is being aggressively recycled by some Ghanaians to counter a suggestion by the so-called Pepper Dem activists that hardworking Ghanaians wives who cook for their husbands are "slaving away".

The remark has drawn strong condemnation from some members of the public, including renowned public figure, Joyce Aryee.

I don’t think cooking for your husband can be seen as slavery, No I don’t think so…making food for the one you love must not be seen as slavery. As a man, you can help your wife in the kitchen or just be around to chat with her," Dr Aryee said in an interview with Accra-based Starr FM.

A veteran Broadcaster, Tommy Annan-Forson, launched a vicious attack on the group, urging media managers to deny them coverage.

Others Ghanaians have also cited the case of Nigerian female billionaire, Folorunsho Alakija, who says she still cooks for her husband unfailing in spite of her rigorous work schedule.

"I still wash his undies until six years ago that he insisted I should stop. I also prepare his special vegetable dish, do his manicure and pedicure regularly.

"I go to the airport to pick him whenever he’s returning from foreign trips. It gives me joy whenever his friends praise my vegetable dish based on what my husband tells them,” Mrs Alakija said.

Some women, led by popular broadcaster, Afia Pokua, have scrambled to form the so-called Sugar Dem GH group to tackle what they say is the toxic anti-men message of the Pepper Dem activists.
