- Courtois has stated that he did not expect Messi to shoot those balls
Chelsea were on Wednesday, March 14, eliminated from the UEFA Champions League after being trashed 3-0 by Barcelona at the Camp Nou.
One of the key talking points after the game has been the performance of Lionel Messi and the fact he made light of Chelsea's goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois.
Messi scored a brace to reach a landmark 100 Champions League goals and he did so by nutmegging Courtois twice, one in the third minute and the other after 63 minutes.
This is what is referred to as 'sulia' in the Ghanaian parlance and it is considered one of the most embarrassing goals for a goalkeeper to concede.
Well, Courtois has explained why he conceeded such goals during the game.
According to him, he did not expect that Messi was going to shoot the ball at the time and thus failed to close his legs.
“I didn’t expect Messi to shoot from there and I was too late to close my legs so that was a mistake on my part.
"It's not nice to start an evening like that," Courtois is reported by Mirror UK to have said.
The Chelsea keeper also admitted that his weakest point is between his legs as he has a lot of space between them even when he is standing in a normal position.
“For a goalkeeper like me from two metres, it’s my weakest point between my legs.
"Even if I'm standing in a normal position there's a lot of space in between. It's annoying but I don't think I have to hide inside," the report quoted him as saying.
