- A video showing some security personnel roughing up a taxi driver lands on social media
- According to reports, the driver was being brutalized because he committed the offence of parking wrongly
A new video of police brutality has surfaced on the internet showing some uniformed security personnel made up of policemen and Motor Transport and Traffic Unit (MTTU), mercilessly manhandling a taxi driver in Adenta, a suburb of Accra in the Greater Accra Region.
According to reports, the driver was charged with wrongful parking by the officers who were on duty on that busy road.
However, it is alleged that the beatings started when the driver reportedly resisted the arrest which invariably angered the uniformed men.
In the shocking video, the young was seen being kicked and heckled as he was commanded to go on his knees.
One of the irate officers could be heard barking, “go down,” as he aggressively manhandled the driver.
Another police officer in a reflective jacket and helmet tried to handcuff the driver but he was met with resistance.
With the help of other officers, the driver was tackled to the ground and handcuffed by the security personnel.
Bystanders who were at the scene of the brutality were overheard pleading on behalf of the driver who had flouted the road regulations.
Some of the street hawkers were heard screaming on top of their voices and quizzed if the driver was an armed robber.
Another lady was overheard saying, “You are going to kill him”; an indication that the brutality was getting out of hand.
One lady who tried to salvage the situation was aggressively pushed aside by one of the officers.
The identity of the driver is yet to be known and it is also yet to be confirmed if he was indeed charged with wrongful parking and what led to such brutality.
The country has been plagued with a number of robbery cases and many Ghanaians are already leaving in fear.
The security services in the country have been tasked by the president to work hard to eradicate the robberies.
