How to do crochet braids for beginners

The following items are required for one to do crochet braids:-

  1. Crochet needle/ latch tool/ bobby pin
  2. Normal needle
  3. Acrylic thread (preferably black)
  4. Pair of scissors
  5. 3 -6 packets of preferred braiding hair

Steps of how to do crochet braids (on yourself or as a beginner)

  1. Make simple cornrows of your hair to the back. Ensure the cornrows are very tight or too thick.
  2. After finishing the cornrows, join up all the cornrows into one at the back. Then using the normal needle and acrylic thread sew it in place to avoid the cornrows unfastening during crocheting.
  3. Take the latch hook/ crochet hook and slide it under the cornrow while closed.
  4. Open the latch hook/ crochet needle, loop the braiding hair and close it.
  5. Pull back the latch hook/crochet needle and hair under the cornrow until a medium-sized hoop is formed.
  6. Open the latch hook/ crochet needle. Using your two fingers to create an opening at the loop.
  7. Insert one end of the braiding hair into the loop between the fingers and pull but don’t tighten yet.
  8. Twist the loop and insert the braiding hair again through the loop, pull and fasten to create a knot to secure the hair tightly.

1. Place the wig cap on the wig head

4. Close the hook and pull back the needle halfway

5. Insert the tail part of the braiding hair into the loop and fasten to make a tight knot at the base of the wig cap and secure the braids

Some people suffer from thinning hair caused by a number of factors such as; hair that too proceeded/ chemically relaxed is prone to thinning, traction alopecia among others. Such hair should be carefully handled especially when doing crochet braids.

  2. Loop the eyelet of your bobby pin

  2. Take the un-braided hair extension and portion them into even sizes of your choice; thin, medium or thick size.

  5. Pull back the latch hook/crochet needle and hair under the cornrow until a medium-sized hoop is formed.

  7. Pull to fasten, and then insert the other strand into the loop, pull again to fasten and secure the braiding hair.
  8. This method does not create a big knot hence its barely visible.
  9. Repeat the procedure until your entire head is fully covered.
  10. Using your comb, straighten the hair and style it.
