- IMANI Vice President Kofi Bentil has described the Ghana-US military deal as disrespectful agreement which should not be even considered
- According to him the hole deal shows how weak and cheap we are and it is and indictment on government's 'Ghana Beyond Aid' mantra
The Vice President of IMANI Ghana, Kofi Bentil, has kicked against the controversial US-Ghana military partnership agreement.
According to him, the agreement is a clear show of disrespect to the sovereignty of Ghana which should not even be considered by government.
"We just show again how weak cheap we are. It’s not even about the substance it’s about the fact that no self-respecting nation will allow itself to be asked to do these things. Only shitholes allow this!! And we are happy to consider it???" he said.
There has been a huge public outcry since news broke that Ghana was in talks with the US for the establishment of their military base here.
Responding to the many criticisms, the Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwul denied at a press conference, the talk of a military base being set.
But for Mr Bentil,"what is described in the agreement fits a military base if they want to set up one" and if government had been really serious with its 'Ghana Beyond Aid' agenda, it would have told off the Americans.
"If I had any power I would simply respond and say as long as Trump is in office I will do America no favours!!!! You can’t insult me denigrate me, deport me and still ask me to help you. This is how Ghana beyond aid should start. With self-respect!!"
In a lengthy post on Facebook, the IMANI Vice President also pointed out to those touting the benefits Ghana will accrue from the deal should bear in mind that no benefit is worth the insult the deal is bringing.
"And I hear people tout the “benefits”. What nonsense!! I am a friend of USA but I don’t like them insulting us and I don’t like us allowing them."
Meanwhile, the Defence Minister has stated that the deal with the US cannot be cancelled.
According to Mr Nitiwul, the agreement was signed way back in 1998 and that they are just renewing it.

“We have already signed a 1998 agreement, we have signed the 2015 agreement and we have already caught ourselves in this net and we cannot back out because this is just a combination of the two agreements,” he revealed.
