- Mr. Smith, who was one-time special assistant to Mr. Rawlings has called on the hierarchy of the NDC to deal with the former president
- He also dared Mr Rawlings to leave the NDC if he is no longer interested in the party's welfare
A member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Victor Smith, has dared founder Jerry John Rawlings to quit if he is fed up with the party.
According to him, the ex-president’s incessant attacks on the party are uncalled for and he must be called to order.
He further accused Rawlings of supporting his wife, Nana Konadu Agyeman, to break away from the NDC to form the National Democratic Party (NDP).
“If your love for the party has declined just leave the party,” he dared the party founder whiles speaking in an interview with Asempa FM.
Rawlings appears to have detached himself from the NDC in recent years and did not fully participate in the party’s 2012 and 2016 election campaign.
He has also directed attack upon attack on the party, accusing it of sidelining competent people, whiles labeling some of the party’s members corrupt.
However, Mr. Smith believes Rawlings has taken his criticism overboard and must be made to know he is overstepping his bounds despite being the founder of the party.
According to him, the hierarchy of the NDC must call Mr. Rawlings to order or forget about ever winning the 2020 elections.
“If the party leadership does not do anything about it, then we will have a very tall order…if they do not do anything about it to have the problem resolved now, it will be very difficult for us to win [the 2020 election],” Mr. Smith cautioned.
He urged the party to be bold, saying “when I say we should deal with him, I mean they [NDC leadership] have to stop him [Rawlings] from doing what he is doing….his remarks have been creating problems within our party.”
He added that “if the party leadership does not rectify it now for the progress of the party, then there is a possibility that we may not win 2020 election.”
