There has been raging debate after the burial and funeral rites of the late dancehall diva, Priscilla Opoku-Kwarteng, aka Ebony over the colour of her coffin.

While some question the propriety of using black coffin to bury one's dead, others have argued that there could be spiritual connotations to the choice of colour for the casket

But the Chief Executive of Gisarg Caskets and Coffins, manufacturers of the coffin used to bury the dancehall artiste, has cleared the air over the choice of the colour.

The CEO, Michael Dela, speaking exclusively to Citi Showbiz, said his company designed the coffin without Ebony in mind.

However, he recommended that particular coffin for the family due to its well-crafted design and colour.

“I must be honest, we didn’t even have Ebony in mind but when we were done with it, I saw the casket and said this will actually suit Ebony. She’s called Ebony and her name represents the colour black,” he said.

Michael Dela added that contrary to the current ongoing media debate, the black casket is actually beautiful and quite common on the market.

“One of the caskets that we sell a lot is the black one. This one was actually one of our newer designs. It was purely done in our quest to do something unique,” Mr Dela said.

The CEO also added that families who have younger royal deceaseds tend to go for caskets that are dark. But occasionally, others also choose the black casket just for the beauty of it.

Michael Dela in his interview disclosed that his business had relationship with Transitions, the company that organized Ebony’s funeral and they only had a call at the last hour that the family had settled on the black casket.

“We got the call at the last hour. It was on a Friday so with regards to what colour they had chosen earlier, we have no idea. We don’t manufacture things according to people’s spiritual inclinations,” he intimated.

The Chief Executive insisted that, the colour of Ebony’s casket was pure art and that he does not subscribe to the notion that it may have spiritual meanings.

The coffin debate is believed to have hinged after Dr. Lawrence Tetteh, the man who paid for the casket, granted interview to Adom TV and expressed some concerns.
