- The Ghana Geological Survey Authority is hinting of a possible earthquake
- The prediction follows earth tremors at some areas of Accra
-The authority fears the earthquake could strike anytime from now
Ghana is to expect an earthquake anytime soon, the country's major Geological Survey Authority has warned.
The Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA) has revealed that the possible earthquake follows various instances of earth tremors currently recorded across various areas of the country.
What this means is that we should expect an earthquake anytime soon in the country.
A senior expert in the area of earthquakes (seismologist), Nicholas Opoku, said serious tremors around the Weija area in Accra is enough evidence of a possible tremor.
Mr. Opoku said the time transmission reading on the seismometer at the authority’s remote station near the Weija Dam indicated that three tremors occurred on the same day, with the first two happening at 3:09 a.m. and 3:41 a.m., while the third one took place at 11:31 a.m. last Saturday.
"An earthquake has a return period, so once we have had a major earthquake like 6.5 on the Richter scale in Accra in 1862 and 1939, it can come and it can even be bigger than that,” he revealed in an interview with Daily Graphic.
Residents of Weija-Broadcasting, Sampa Valley, SCC, West Hills Mall area, Gbawe, Anyaa, all expressed concerns over the tremor.
The tremors caused panic among some residents of the affected areas, with some fearing the trembling could be followed by an earthquake.
An earth tremor is a relatively small or short-lived movement of the earth's surface caused by the same forces that produce earthquakes.
Here in Ghana, the only severe earth tremor was recorded way back in 1999 to 2000 - a development which left many buildings with wide cracks.
