5 reasons why Nana Addo’s silence on the 'dark' Ghana-US military deal is frightening

Ghanaians woke up morning to hear of a military agreement reached with the United States of America.

Rumours about the establishment of a military base in the country sparked debates among a cross-section of Ghanaians.

Among the several issues of concern is the alleged silence of President Akufo-Addo on the matter, considering his status as the first gentleman of the land.

YEN.com.gh brings to you 5 reasons why his silence is a reason for concern for Ghanaians:

1. Rumours surrounding the leaked documents:

Reports of the leaked details of the agreement generated a lot of talk, with some wondering if it is safe to move about in the country. Parts of the report allegedly give American soldiers a number of rights, a situation that is quite unsettling for Ghanaians.

2. Statements from the some government officials and the US embassy

In the heat of the moment, some government officials allegedly denied plans to establish a military base in Ghana. The US Embassy is also reported released a brief statement and referred all questions to the government of Ghana.

3. Public outcry

Knowledge of alleged plans of the presence of American soldiers in Ghana was met with wild reactions from a cross-section of Ghanaians. This was translated into worrying comments on several platforms such as radio, television and social media.

4. Demonstrations

Some Ghanaians thronged the premises of Parliament to protest the passage of the bill laid before the house. On March 28, 2018, another demonstration was organized by some Ghanaians to protest the passage of the agreement.

5. Uncertainty about the terms of the deal

Till today, the average Ghanaians is at a loss, with respect to the exact terms of the deal. This could manifest itself into a bigger challenge as questions outnumber answers with each passing day.
