Officials of the Ghana Police Service have shot dead five suspected robbers on the Accra-Tema motorway, YEN.com.gh can report.
The suspected bandits were gunned down in a police operation on Thursday dawn, according to a report by Citinewsroom.com.
Police say they launched the raid after receiving intelligence that robbers, numbering about 15, were planning to visit terror on the residents of Accra and Tema.
The suspected robbers were reportedly riding in two saloon vehicles and a bus when they were intercepted by a police surveillance team.
YEN.com.gh understands that police officials ordered the suspected robbers to park their vehicles, but they refused and started shooting as soon as they saw the police vehicle.
The police are said to have then called for reinforcement and engaged the robbers in a deadly shootout, killing five of them instantly, with 10 others escaping - some with injuries.
Several weapons were reportedly retrieved during the operation.
The suspected robbers, according to the police, were among those who terrorised residents of Accra a few weeks ago.
Some social media users have praised the decision to kill the suspected robbers, describing it as "good policing".
Others, however, have condemned the killings, noting that it is illegal to kill suspected robbers before putting them before court.
